Master of Arts (Honours) - Celtic and Scottish History (QV52)
The University of Edinburgh
What you will study
Scotland's past is uncovered and its future shaped through a joint honours programme that offers the opportunity to study the languages, literatures, and cultures of the Celtic world alongside the history of Scotland.
In the Celtic department, the focus is on the medieval literary tradition of Early Irish and Medieval Welsh, which is the most extensive in all of Europe. Scottish Gaelic from the late Middle Ages to the present is also explored, along with the rich oral tradition recorded from the 18th century onwards and the poetry from the golden age of Gaelic literature in the 18th century.
The programme includes the study of 19th and 20th century responses to the rapid social, cultural, and linguistic changes in countries where the Celtic languages are spoken. Additionally, students will examine the writing, song, and media production that emerge from the vibrant and diverse contemporary cultural scene in Gaelic Scotland, Ireland, and Wales.
Courses in language, literature, history, and culture are offered at all levels of study, allowing students to tailor their program to their specific interests in particular areas, periods, and disciplines of Celtic studies. The department's expertise extends to theoretical and practical issues of current sociolinguistics, language policy, and language revitalization.
