What you will study

The BSc (Hons) Biology with Foundation Year at the University of Derby offers a four-year route to build the skills, knowledge, and confidence required for success in the field of biology. The programme provides access to excellent facilities, including an Aquatic Research Facility, glasshouse, insectary, and specialist laboratories, and incorporates fieldwork as an essential component of study. It combines a thorough grounding in traditional aspects of biology with exposure to the latest research-led innovations, while offering opportunities for work placements and internships to enhance practical experience. Cutting-edge instrumentation and technology in the laboratories, combined with a strong network of contacts and employer partnerships, broaden professional outlook and employability.

Biological processes are often circular in nature, providing a model for transitioning society toward a circular economy that minimizes material and energy waste. Governments, companies, and inter-governmental agencies increasingly invest in biology due to its potential for environmental solutions and related business opportunities. Advances in DNA sequencing technologies, other “omics” fields, and computational capabilities are transforming understanding of biology, creating opportunities to enhance health, wellbeing, and environmental sustainability. Biology is highly interdisciplinary, requiring collaboration with other sciences to achieve success and enabling biologists to contribute across diverse sectors.

The programme addresses pressing global challenges such as climate change, overexploitation of natural resources, and biodiversity loss, which collectively pose existential threats to humanity. Through alignment with the UN’s Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) agenda, the curriculum equips graduates with the knowledge and practical skills needed to tackle climate change, biodiversity loss, unsustainable resource use, and inequality. Biology graduates are prepared to make meaningful contributions in the laboratory, field, or office, entering roles that support sustainability and have a positive impact on society and the environment.
