Wichita State University
The Elliott School of Communication at Wichita State prepares students for successful careers and a lifetime of learning in a communication environment that is increasingly social, mobile, visual and global.
Our curriculum focuses on skills that are the basis of success in marketing, public relations, journalism and other communication fields: researching, writing, speaking, thinking visually, problem-solving, studying history, and applying theory, law and ethics. Majors:
• Electronic Media: Students learn digital storytelling techniques for use in a number of communication platforms, including television, radio and the web. Electronic Media majors are prepared for producing, directing, writing, doing videography or working in any number of visual platforms.
• Integrated Marketing Communications: An empahsis in IMC prepares students for the fields of advertising, public relations, marketing and related creative media. Courses emphasize writing and marketing skills that build understanding of how publications and campaigns are packaged and produced.
• Journalism: With a focus on storytelling, the integrated print/broadcast journalism emphasis area prepares students for careers in any news-related organization. Writing, editing, photography, design and presentation for mass audiences are stressed.
• Open: Communication majors with interests and needs that are not served by the school’s traditional emphasis areas can develop, propose and acquire faculty approval for a special open emphasis program.
• Strategic Communication: Emphasizes building meaningful relationships, grooming civic leadership and producing marketable employees through public relations and human relation skills. The curriculum includes giving effective presentations, facilitating small-group discussions, handling conflict, managing diverse constituencies and cultivating leadership.
