Bachelor of Science (Honours) - Biological Sciences (Sandwich Year)

Nottingham Trent University - Clifton Campus

What you will study

Program Description On this course, students will start by building their understanding of the fundamental principles of biosciences, and then take their degree wherever they want-whether that’s environmental biology, biomedical sciences, biochemistry and microbiology, or physiology and pharmacology.

Students will investigate, they will collaborate, and they will get hands on — in the labs, on field trips, and through their own work placement.

Everyone studies the same core modules in term one, to give them a broad biological sciences knowledge before they choose a specialist pathway to follow for the rest of their degree. Students will be given support and guidance to help them choose the route that will enable them to achieve their career goals. The pathways are:

• Environmental biology – Nottingham Trent University takes a multidisciplinary approach to the ecology of natural and artificial ecosystems. Students will study the diversity of the living world and how their impacts on it can be managed sustainably. Extensive field-based practical work will help students to develop the skills needed by environmental professionals. • Biomedical Sciences – Students will learn why biomedical sciences underpin much of modern medicine on this pathway. Students will study how to identify and diagnose diseases and gain the practical skills needed to work in the biomedical field. • Biochemistry and Microbiology – Choose this pathway to understand how these disciplines complement each other. Discover how they can be a powerful tool for understanding major challenges facing society today from antibiotic resistance to fighting cancer. • Physiology and Pharmacology – These two subject areas go hand-in-hand when studying the human body and how drugs can affect it. This pathway looks at how physiology and pharmacology can work together to identify and better treat human diseases.

Students can personalise their learning further by taking a placement in their area of interest, to build on the theory and skills they have learned. Students can also choose a final year research project in a topic that reflects their core interests and deepens their knowledge and skills.

Please be advised that this program includes a sandwich year, which will be studied during the student's undergraduate degree.
