Bachelor of Arts (Honours) - Fashion, Marketing and Communication

University of Derby - Derby

What you will study

The BA (Hons) Fashion, Marketing and Communication course is designed to develop fashion design skills while expanding knowledge of key business aspects through a combination of creative and practical study. At its core, fashion marketing focuses on supplying, disseminating, and managing information relating to brands, companies, or individuals for both public and press audiences.

The programme is suited to those who aim to balance creativity with strategic thinking and is ideal for individuals who wish to understand the business of fashion while maintaining a strong interest in design and making, ultimately supporting progression into fashion marketing careers.

Students gain valuable insight into the commercial elements of the fashion industry from an integrated perspective that incorporates emerging design and marketing concepts. The programme draws on expertise from the BA (Hons) Fashion course to create a cohesive approach to learning, encouraging bespoke routes of personal study. In the first year, students are introduced to the fundamentals of fashion design practice and market sensing for the ready-to-wear sector. The second year places greater emphasis on the commercial environment, with a focus on branding and influence, alongside encouragement to participate in national and international competitions, where recent students have achieved notable success. The final year offers a unique opportunity to develop professional thinking and creative practice through a self-managed process of experimentation, risk-taking, and resolution, supported by modules dedicated to business and entrepreneurship that position creative activity firmly within a commercial context.

The programme strongly encourages second-year students to undertake an industry work placement, which also leads to the additional qualification of the Diploma in Professional Practice. Although placements can be demanding, they provide invaluable professional experience and are highly rewarding. Previous placements have included a wide range of well-known companies such as Marks & Spencer, Temperley London, Erdem, Mother of Pearl, Preen, Aitor Throup, Tommy Hilfiger, and Roksanda, among others.
