University of Derby - Derby

What you will study

The BSc (Hons) Economics and Finance with Foundation Year is accredited by the Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment (CISI), the largest and most widely respected professional body for the securities and investment industry in the UK.

The programme is designed to develop an essential professional toolkit for careers as an economist or financial analyst, with a strong focus on strategic decision-making skills that enhance graduate employability. Learning is supported by the Financial Markets Lab, which adds a practical dimension through insights into working life on a trading floor, alongside opportunities to undertake live financial consultancy and economic research projects with businesses. Students may also have the opportunity to take up placements and internships in the UK or overseas, supported by strong employer networks that enable interaction with industry leaders, economics experts and senior finance professionals throughout the course.

Including a foundation year as part of the four-year study programme provides a strong academic and professional head start. The foundation year is designed to strengthen skills, knowledge and confidence, with extensive support from experienced academic staff, before progression to the first stage of the honours degree. This route is particularly beneficial for those planning a career change or seeking to develop understanding in subject areas that may be new. Degrees with a foundation year are continuous, meaning there is no need to reapply after successfully completing the initial year.
