Overview
Graduates of the Biotechnology programme are prepared for careers in the biotechnology sector, a high-technology field that spans a wide range of employment areas. Through comprehensive experiential learning, students develop technical and knowledge-based skills while gaining practical experience with advanced scientific equipment and experimental techniques.
The programme covers a range of disciplines, including microbiology, molecular biology, tissue culture, biochemistry, analytical chemistry, and pharmaceutical biotechnology. Students explore current developments in the field and investigate potential biotechnology applications designed to address contemporary challenges.
In line with recognised industry standards, students learn how to collect, document, analyse, and present laboratory and experimental data. An introduction to changemaking and social entrepreneurship enables them to identify opportunities in biotechnology and develop creative, solution-focused approaches to problem-solving.
Throughout the programme, students are supported in developing a professional portfolio, or living résumé, as they expand their skill sets and build professional networks.
A Biotechnology diploma can lead to a variety of career opportunities. Graduates may contribute to the preparation and operation of laboratory-based tests and analyses, as well as supporting the efficient day-to-day running of laboratories. Potential roles include bench scientist, laboratory assistant, quality control technician, quality assurance technician, and other technical positions specific to individual employers.
Employment opportunities may be available across public and private sector organisations, including pharmaceutical companies, cannabis production businesses, academic institutions, and clinical organisations.
