Program Description For students who've finished high school but don’t meet the entry requirements for university, a Foundation Certificate can help them gain entry to an undergraduate degree. After completing this pathway option students qualify for progression to the 1st year of an undergraduate degree at the University of Essex.
A student’s course length is determined mainly by their English language level (UKVI IELTS score). Students on all course lengths take a set of common or similar modules to gain a solid base of skills for university. Students taking a course longer than 2 terms, will take additional modules designed to improve one or more of their English language level, academic skills, and basic knowledge of particular subjects.
Bachelor of Laws (Honours) - Law with Criminology
The LLB Law with Criminology provides students with a rigorous academic training in the discipline of law integrated with criminology. This gives them a thorough grounding in current issues in criminal law and criminal justice in a wider social context. The School emphasizes an awareness of how the law of England and Wales is placed in European and international frameworks.
Students develop a critical awareness of the nature of law within its social, political and economic contexts. Not only will they learn legal rules, but they also consider the function of law in society, the philosophy of law, policy issues and law reform. Students explore and debate the difficult questions such as should crime be punished? How do we prevent crime? Providing them with the ability to consider, evaluate and respond to alternative and, possibly, conflicting points of view.
Students cover the key areas of law and criminology, as well as topics including:
• Government power • Criminal liability • Policing and punishment • Crime and the media • EU law
At Essex they specialize in commercial law, public law, and human rights law. They are ranked in the top 100 Law Schools in the THE World University Rankings 2020 and are top 20 in the UK for research excellence (REF 2014, mainstream universities, THE 2014).
Students are taught by criminologists and sociologists based in the Department of Sociology, ranked among the top 50 departments in the QS World University Rankings by Subject (2020) They receive training in criminological research methods including how to design a survey, how to map crime hotspots, conduct interviews and focus groups. Students are also introduced to legal research methods.
