What you will study
This new BEng Software Engineering programme is designed for students who want to focus their studies on the analysis, design, development, testing and maintenance of software systems. The demand for software engineers has never been higher. Companies and institutions from a variety of sectors are constantly looking for innovators who can keep up with rapid advancements in technology and software development. This course will provide students with all the necessary tools and techniques to meet that demand and forge a career as a technological trailblazer. As part of an ever-growing computing curriculum here at the University of Roehampton, students will gain a strong understanding of other core computing skills such as databases and cyber security, while specialising in a sought-after skill that will be an imperative for organisations spanning across many different industries – helping them become a competent and well-rounded computing professional. Students will be supported by leading experts in computing, software engineering and cyber security throughout the course. In the second and third years, students will delve into software architecture and design, project management and secure software development, all while developing their knowledge of programming languages. Students will also be given the opportunity to become a Certified Ethical Hacker via The International Council of Electronic Commerce Consultants (EC-Council). The BEng Software Engineering course follows an active blended learning style, with some lectures replaced by workshops and seminars. This means that students will be in a learning environment focused on collaborative learning in the lab spaces of the University of Roehampton's state-of-the-art media centre, the Sir David Bell Building, and be immersed in an environment that students will experience in the IT industry. Employability in computing programmes is embedded throughout the curriculum, with a focus on project-based assessment that attempts to mimic real-life scenarios. This is especially demonstrated in the collaborative nature of the teaching, the team working elements and the Final Year Project. Students will gain hands on experience and a solid understanding of what it is like to work in a professional software development team, preparing them for the world of work after their graduation. The University of Roehampton is ranked as the best modern university in London (Times Good University Guide 2022 and Complete University Guide 2022). This course offers all students the option of a one-year paid work placement, to boost their employability even further. If students choose this route, they will take the placement following year two of their course, and then return to complete their degree.
