If students hold a bachelor’s degree or equivalent, but don’t meet the entry requirements for a master’s, a Pre-Master’s can help them gain a place on a postgraduate degree. For progression to the 1st year of a postgraduate degree at the University of Essex. Course length is determined mainly by students' English language level (UKVI IELTS score).
Students on all course lengths take a set of common or similar modules to gain a solid base of skills for university. If their course is longer than 2 terms, students will take additional modules designed to improve one or more of their English language level, academic skills, and basic knowledge of particular subjects.
Master of Arts - Translation and Professional Practice This University of Essex course will introduce students to techniques and technology that will significantly develop their own personal translation skills to competently deliver professional literary, technical, and audio-visual translation.
Essex's hands-on training includes working with native speakers of their chosen language and becoming familiar with the latest technologies used by professionals in their everyday work. Students will also learn aspects of the business side of the translation profession to actively access the translation industry.
This course is offered with the combination of English and one of Arabic, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish and Japanese. Students can be a native or near-native speaker of any of these languages, as they learn to translate to and from both languages. Students work with native speakers in developing their ability to move accurately and quickly between their chosen language and English.
This course gives students the tools to confidently deal with the translation specific genres like journalistic, promotional, medical- scientific, academic, technical and literary. Areas of special study include: principles of translation, technologies of translation I&II and post editing, audiovisual translation, subtitling, intercultural communication.
