Master of Science - Robotics and Autonomous Systems

University of Southampton - Boldrewood Innovation

What you will study

The Robotics and Autonomous Systems master’s programme provides students with a comprehensive foundation in the key principles and practical applications of intelligent robotic systems.

Participants develop the specialist knowledge and technical skills required to design, build, and deploy robotics and autonomous systems across a wide range of sectors.

During their studies on the MSc Robotics and Autonomous Systems course, students undertake core modules in robotics fundamentals, modelling and dynamics, sensing and data interpretation, and planning and control. They also examine the societal, ethical, and regulatory dimensions of robotics, and gain hands-on experience with real robotic systems through structured laboratory work and group design challenges.

Through a range of optional modules, students can tailor their learning to areas of personal or professional interest, such as advanced control, computer vision, and machine learning, or application domains including maritime, automotive, aeronautical, and space.

As part of the course, each student completes an individual research project under the supervision of an academic whose expertise aligns with their interests. Many projects are industry-informed, enabling students to apply their knowledge to real-world challenges and strengthen both professional and research skills. The programme also offers opportunities to expand professional networks through a dedicated MSc conference.

This course is designed for individuals from a variety of academic and professional backgrounds who wish to specialise in robotics and autonomous systems, including those seeking to reskill or change careers.

Graduates of the MSc in Robotics and Autonomous Systems are prepared for careers in the rapidly evolving fields of robotics, automation, artificial intelligence, and intelligent systems development across numerous industries. In addition to providing advanced technical expertise, practical experience, and professional recognition, the programme offers a solid foundation for progression to doctoral-level study.
