Bachelor of Science (Honours) - Sport Studies and Criminology

The programme enables students to explore a wide range of human behaviour, from understanding the criminal mind to enhancing athletic performance through sport psychology. It addresses questions such as the consequences of crime, how criminals are managed and controlled, and how psychological principles can improve performance in sport. Students’ learning is underpinned by research-led teaching in areas including criminal behaviour, offending and rehabilitation, sports psychology, and sport coaching.

Sport Studies modules are delivered by experts who are specialists in their respective fields, including accredited Sport Psychologists, Physiologists, and Strength and Conditioning practitioners, all of whom bring substantial professional experience into the classroom. The Criminology teaching team comprises lecturers with diverse backgrounds in probation, policing, law, mental health, and academia. Many of the lecturers actively engage with local, national, and international organisations, and contribute to academic publications including journals and textbooks.

The programme incorporates extensive practical work to enhance learning. Students make use of outstanding sport facilities, including a physiology laboratory equipped with the latest tools for testing and measuring fitness for participation and performance sport. They also utilise a variety of computer software packages for performance analysis and statistical evaluation. Strong industry links allow students to gain real-world experience and bring their studies to life, with opportunities to work alongside sport and exercise professionals, as well as with police, probation services, and prisons.

Students have the opportunity to enhance their employability by taking an optional placement year, allowing them to apply their skills in a real-world setting. The University provides support in securing a placement and throughout the student’s time in industry. This experience helps learners gain valuable professional experience, build contacts, and explore potential career paths before graduation.

The Sport Studies and Criminology Joint Honours degree offers flexibility in study pathways. In the first year, students study both subjects equally. By the end of the first year, they can choose to major or minor in a selected subject, or continue to study both disciplines equally, tailoring the degree to their individual interests and career goals.
