What you will study
The BSc (Hons) Economics and Finance is a professionally informed programme with strong input from employers, equipping graduates to undertake economic research and analysis, manage complex financial data sources, diagnose problems and make the strategic decisions expected of an applied economist. The curriculum covers a broad range of microeconomic and macroeconomic issues, quantitative methods, computing techniques and business performance concepts, while also providing a solid understanding of how different economic systems operate, the impact of government policies and the performance of economies worldwide.
This is a highly practical and applied degree designed to broaden professional outlooks through varied, real-world challenges. Study activities may include analysing news reports, developing strategy documents, interpreting financial statements, undertaking research tasks, using the latest analytical software, delivering presentations and media-style outputs, managing a simulated investment portfolio and analysing international market data from sources such as Bloomberg.
Employers play a key role in shaping the programme by contributing real-world case studies, practical scenarios and consultancy projects that ensure learning remains current and relevant. The teaching team is actively engaged in influential research that informs contemporary debates in economics and finance, with lecturers publishing widely, including authorship of leading economics textbooks used in universities.
Students also benefit from engagement with business experts, industry leaders and finance professionals, gaining insight into the latest developments in the City through high-profile contributors such as the Visiting Professor of Banking and Financial Economics, Professor Trevor Williams, former Chief Economist at Lloyds Bank PLC. Opportunities to build professional networks are further enhanced through involvement in university societies, including the Economics, Trading and Investment Society, the Business and Entrepreneurial Society and the Derby University Network of Entrepreneurs (DUNE).
