Bachelor of Fine Arts - Theatre Production
MacEwan University
What you will study
The Theatre Production major prepares student to work in live and recorded entertainment sectors as a technician, artisan, craftsperson and manager. Through hands-on work experience, students produce the entire MacEwan University theatre season. Trained in the fundamental areas of theatre production, students learn to apply those skills as a member of a variety of creative teams: stage and production management, costuming, scenic painting, scenic construction, lighting, video, properties and audio. Guided by instructors with years of experience in the field, students tackle the challenges of a production season—and reap the rewards.
From the first term until the final year of the degree, students are members of a variety of creative teams: stage and production management, costume, scenic painting, scenic construction, lighting, video, properties and audio. The theory students learn in class is immediately put into practice through hands-on activities.
In the first two years, students complete required foundational courses. In the third and fourth years, students have the opportunity to focus on a specific area of theatre production and to enhance their learning with courses from other disciplines.
Prior to the opening nights of the three major musical productions and two workshop performances in the MacEwan University Theatre Season, students close the workshop and classroom doors behind them and spend their time fulfilling practicum requirements.
Note: Students may choose to exit the Bachelor of Fine Arts with a Diploma in Theatre Production after successful completion of the first 60 credits of their major.
