Overview

Communication and Media Studies examines a range of contemporary questions, including who controls the media and why, how communication operates in today’s globalised world, and how different media technologies are developed, used and targeted. The field critically explores the role and evolution of communication and media in modern society.

At Memorial University, Communication and Media Studies has been one of the fastest-growing programs since its introduction in 2010. As an interdisciplinary major, it provides students with opportunities to study courses across several disciplines within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. The program is housed in the Department of English.

Students may apply for admission to the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences by selecting the Bachelor of Arts as their program choice on the undergraduate application. Direct entry is subject to meeting Memorial University’s general admission requirements. Students may select Communication and Media Studies as their major when applying, or they may explore other options and officially declare the major in a later semester by contacting the Registrar’s Office at registrar@mun.ca. A sample schedule is available outlining 10 courses that students may take during their first year in the program.
