Bachelor of Arts (Honours) - Philosophy and English Literature (VQ53)

University of Reading

What you will study

With the BA Philosophy and English literature course, students develop critical and analytical skills and apply them to a variety of philosophical and literary texts. Students become expert at presenting arguments clearly and persuasively.

In philosophy, students will receive an understanding of the central philosophical principles, concepts, problems, texts and figures. They will be taught by leading experts whose research strengths lie especially in moral philosophy and the philosophy of the mind and language.

In the English Literature modules, students will read more of authors and genres that they may already know (from tragedy to Gothic, from Shakespeare and Dickens to Plath and Beckett). But they will also encounter aspects of literary studies that may be less familiar to them, from children’s literature to publishing studies and the history of the book.

Students are encouraged to undertake work placements as they provide a chance to put newly acquired knowledge and skills into practice as well as allowing them to gain valuable real-world experience. Students can undertake a placement at any point in their degree and work in a company or charity relevant to their final year studies.
