Bachelor of Arts (Honours) - International Relations and Sociology

The International Relations and Sociology programme at Derby adopts a transdisciplinary approach to the study of world affairs and global issues, providing students with insight into the trends that affect human societies, policies, and the planet. The course enables students to understand the development of the modern world, anticipate future directions, and explore ways to bring about positive change. It encourages a comprehensive understanding of the dramatic and diverse changes influencing contemporary life.

In International Relations modules, students engage in projects that require devising solutions to real problems and presenting findings to external audiences. For example, a work experience module in the second year involves collaboration with a group, organisation, or company to recommend or implement change. In the third year, students undertake an advanced community or digital project, further developing practical problem-solving skills. Sociology modules cover a wide range of societal issues, including media, culture, patterns of inequality, globalisation, social change, youth justice, the sociology of politics and protest, and an independent study module that provides a comprehensive understanding of societal issues.
