On this Public Health degree, students will gain the vital knowledge and experience that can be applied to any areas of public health practice. This might range from community empowerment to statistical analysis and epidemiology to policy development. The University's strong emphasis on employment-orientated knowledge and skills development means that graduates are ready to start work as public health practitioners.

With the guidance of research-active tutors, learners will explore strategies that will improve the UK's health, from social change and targeting inequalities, to designing and implementing national campaigns. A structured work experience assignment in the final year will give students the opportunity to use the knowledge and skills they have developed in the workplace and make valuable professional contacts. Moreover, students can reflect upon, synthesize and maximize their learning by undertaking a placement for a minimum of 9 months.

Trained postgraduate researchers may also contribute to seminar teaching with latest research insight. The teaching is informed by research and consultancy work, and 97% of the faculty lecturers hold a teaching qualification.

In a typical week, learning takes place through a combination of seminars and workshops, enabling students to discuss and develop their understanding of topics covered in lectures in smaller groups. They'll also be able to meet their personal tutor.

Outside of timetabled sessions, learners are also expected to dedicate around 30 hours a week to self-study. This may involve further reading and research, preparing coursework and presentations, and preparing for tests and exams. The University facilities are designed to support students in these activities. In addition, during the week learners are encouraged to join societies and participate in sporting and other activities to engage in the wider life of the university community.

There are many opportunities for graduates with a public health degree. They have gone on to a variety of roles in local government, the National Health Service, the wide sweep of organizations in the voluntary sector, regional, national and international bodies, and industries involved in food, transport, the environment, pollution and education.
