Program Description Foundation Studies Program (Standard) - Life Science (X0F:4) (0100808):

The Foundation Studies program is a direct academic pathway to first-year undergraduate degree study, or an equivalent. The program acts as a bridging course for international students who wish to study a university undergraduate degree course but who don’t yet meet academic requirements and/or have the English language skills for tertiary study.

To successfully complete the program, students must achieve a 50% pass in all units, including English.

Upon successful completion of the course, graduates can enter one of the University of Tasmania’s undergraduate degree courses.

Bachelor of Information and Communication Technology and Bachelor of Science - Statistics and Decision Science (93H):

The double degree allows students to deepen their knowledge and expertise within two separate study areas. This means students can choose from University of Tasmania’s range of exciting, diverse courses and they can embark on a journey as unique as they are.

The University of Tasmania’s science degree provides students with a foundation of core skills in science, analysis, and rational thinking. They have options to focus their studies in one or more scientific disciplines and learn the methods to apply their skills and knowledge to the practical needs of industry, business, and government in both scientific and non-scientific roles.

The BICT is a specialist degree with both a theoretical and practical focus. It develops technological understanding and skills that are in high demand world-wide, plus builds project management and other business soft-skills that make students an ICT professional.

Everyone lives in a world flooded with data, and the interpretation and application of that data require fluency in statistics and decision science. Decision science is the branch of mathematics that primarily concerns itself with making optimal use of scarce resources. Statistical methods allow us to understand the world around us by analysing increasingly plentiful amounts of data to tease out cause and effect from mere correlation and to make accurate predictions. By studying Statistics & Decision Science students will equip themselves with the mathematical tools required to make good decisions in an uncertain world.

This major is aimed at people who have an interest in the mathematical modelling and analysis of real life systems using statistics, applied probability and optimization tools. From modelling global phenomena such as pandemics and climate change, to local problems such as the spread of wombat mange, the skills gained by studying statistics and decision science are widely applicable, easily portable, and highly valued in the modern workforce. Students, lecturers bring examples from live projects such as improving patient flow through hospitals, implementing maintenance schedules for infrastructure – even using machine learning to identify bird species from bush recordings.

Students can expect to get hands-on small group tutorial and computer lab teaching with plenty of contact with the staff. The University of Tasmania prides themselves on the collegial atmosphere between staff and students. Through the very active Maths and Physics Society students can get together with like-minded students, navigate the exciting challenges that come with undergraduate study, and make great friends along the way.
