Program Description Foundation Studies Program (Fast Track) - Physical Science (X0G:5) (0100809):
The Foundation Studies program is a direct academic pathway to first-year undergraduate degree study, or an equivalent. The program acts as a bridging course for international students who wish to study a university undergraduate degree course but who don’t yet meet academic requirements and/or have the English language skills for tertiary study.
To successfully complete the program, students must achieve a 50% pass in all units, including English.
Upon successful completion of the course, graduates can enter one of the University of Tasmania’s undergraduate degree courses.
Bachelor of Information and Communication Technology and Bachelor of Science - Mathematics (93H):
The double degree allows students to deepen their knowledge and expertise within two separate study areas. This means students can choose from University of Tasmania’s range of exciting, diverse courses and they can embark on a journey as unique as they are.
The University of Tasmania’s science degree provides students with a foundation of core skills in science, analysis, and rational thinking. They have options to focus their studies in one or more scientific disciplines and learn the methods to apply their skills and knowledge to the practical needs of industry, business, and government in both scientific and non-scientific roles.
The BICT is a specialist degree with both a theoretical and practical focus. It develops technological understanding and skills that are in high demand world-wide, plus builds project management and other business soft-skills that make students an ICT professional.
Mathematics underpins technology and describes all aspects of the natural world. It’s at the core of emerging industries all over the world, and is key to technological innovation. Mathematics graduates are agile thinkers, with portable skills in analysis, reasoning and problem solving, all of which are in high demand in the modern workforce. With employers as diverse as NASA, Google, the Bureau of Meteorology and the Department of Health and Human Services snapping up University of Tasmania’s recent graduates, studying maths really can take students anywhere.
Mathematical modelling skills developed in this major will give students the ability to model dynamical systems and understand how these systems will react to perturbation. For instance, the techniques students will learn underpin climate models that inform climate action. Indeed, many of the UN sustainable development goals require us to accurately model the world around us and predict how it will respond to change - mathematical skills are a key component of doing this successfully.
Students can expect to get hands-on small group tutorial and computer lab teaching with plenty of contact with the staff. University of Tasmania’s pride themselves on the collegial atmosphere between staff and students. Through the very active Maths and Physics Society students can get together with like-minded students, navigate the exciting challenges that come with undergraduate study, and make great friends along the way.
