Overview

The Deakin College Foundation Program is equivalent to upper secondary school (Year 12) and university foundation programs. It aims to prepare students for further study in a Deakin College Diploma or for entry into the first year of a selected Deakin University bachelor degree.

The course consists of either a standard or extended track program. The standard track program consists of eight academic units: five core units and three elective units. The extended track program has an additional four units.

Various support services focusing on language, literacy and numeracy assistance are also available to help students in their studies. Each unit includes four hours of classes per week. Assessment for all units is continuous and includes tests, assignments and case study analysis. Most units have a final two-hour examination. To graduate from the Deakin College Foundation Program, students must complete and pass all eight units in the standard program or 12 units in the extended program.

The Diploma of Health Sciences can gain students direct entry into second year of Deakin University bachelor degrees in Exercise and Sports Science, Health Sciences, Nutrition Science, Psychological Science, Public Health and Health Promotion, and Biomedical Science. This Diploma will give students a comprehensive understanding of the health of individuals, communities and populations, so that they are prepared to enter a wide variety of undergraduate courses.

Bachelor of Health Sciences graduates can be confident they will have a solid grounding in a range of health-related fields. They will graduate prepared for a successful career in the largest and fastest growing employment sector in Australia.

Students will become specialists in up to three major areas or broaden their knowledge and skill set through elective units. Combining the interests with multiple majors can increase the competitiveness for a variety of health roles while opening the door to further study. This course also offers valuable workplace learning opportunities, giving them the chance to apply their knowledge in real-world contexts and build professional networks in the health sector.

Deakin University’s degree gives an opportunity to learn from leaders in this field and build genuine industry connections. Students will get the chance to explore and combine their specific interests, while gaining unique expertise relevant to contemporary issues in health.
