Oxford Brookes University - Headington

What you will study

This degree explores how hospitality organisations can strengthen their operational capabilities by using a range of analytical techniques and management tools. Students examine areas such as performance analysis, financial management, marketing strategy, data analytics, and human resource practices to understand how businesses can improve efficiency and customer experience. The course also considers the broader impacts of tourism, including its effects on local communities, cultures, and the environment, encouraging a balanced and sustainable approach to development.

The programme highlights the importance of identifying and managing stakeholders involved in tourism destinations, such as local residents, businesses, governments, and visitors. It also addresses how the hospitality and tourism sector is adapting to rapid changes in digitisation and automation, equipping students with the knowledge to navigate technological advancements and evolving consumer expectations in a global context.

Students gain practical insights through guest lectures and industry visits to renowned organisations, including luxury hotels, cultural institutions, and heritage sites. These experiences allow them to observe how professionals tackle real-world challenges and to build valuable industry connections. The teaching team brings a wealth of academic research, consultancy experience, and professional expertise, supporting students in developing their own networks through mentorship and placement opportunities both in the UK and internationally.

The course structure is designed to build strong academic foundations while enhancing industry knowledge and practical skills. Core areas of study include finance, marketing, data analytics, and human resource management, alongside live projects where students apply their learning to real scenarios such as designing destination concepts or planning customer journeys. As students progress, they explore topics like hospitality operations management, destination development, and digital marketing from a global perspective, with optional modules allowing further specialisation in areas such as consumer behaviour, innovation, and business strategy.

Work placements form an integral part of the programme, with opportunities to gain experience at leading international hospitality brands as well as smaller independent operators. In the final year, students consolidate their learning through a dissertation or consultancy project, often inspired by challenges encountered during their placement, enabling them to demonstrate both academic insight and practical problem-solving skills.
