University of Derby - Derby
What you will study
The MSc Diagnostic Radiography (Pre-Registration) is one of a very small number of pre-registration master’s programmes in diagnostic radiography in the UK and is currently the only course of its kind in the region. The programme is approved by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), enabling graduates to apply for registration as a diagnostic radiographer on successful completion, subject to meeting HCPC requirements.
The course is designed to develop competent and reflective practitioners who are able to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team. It enhances critical thinking, enquiry and research skills through access to state-of-the-art facilities, including a Clinical Skills Suite with a purpose-built diagnostic imaging suite that reflects equipment used in professional practice. Learning is supported by an experienced and enthusiastic teaching team that employs a wide range of teaching and learning approaches to support both professional and academic development.
A variety of work placement opportunities form an integral part of the programme, ranging from large teaching hospitals offering a broad spectrum of imaging modalities to smaller community hospitals providing locally based care. These placements support the development of practical skills and professional confidence while enhancing employability and career prospects, building on prior undergraduate study in science or healthcare-related disciplines, typically at 2:1 level or above, subject to additional entry requirements.
The programme provides comprehensive knowledge and extensive practical experience required for qualification as a diagnostic radiographer. Alongside the development of essential technical and professional skills for safe and effective clinical practice, the course fosters a deep and critical understanding of the profession, supporting future innovation and leadership within radiography. Delivered as an accelerated programme over two full calendar years from September to September, the course includes substantial clinical placement activity during the summer periods to ensure the development of required practical competencies.
