Bachelor of Arts (Honours) - Animation

University of Derby - Derby

What you will study

The BA (Hons) Animation programme at Derby allows students to experiment with the latest digital software, study the principles of animation, produce distinctive animated films, and develop the professional awareness necessary for a career in the field. Delivered in a newly refurbished, dedicated production studio, the course combines traditional and digital animation practices under the guidance of experienced teaching staff.

Students engage with a broad range of methods, materials, and processes, from traditional hand-drawn animation to 3D digital techniques. The programme encourages combining these methods to pursue individual interests, develop a distinctive approach to animation production, and realise unique creative visions. Animation is explored across applications such as storytelling, social commentary, personal agenda films, documentary, music videos, live performance, broadcasting, and advertising.

The curriculum includes drawing, sequential image-making, 2D and 3D computer animation, character development, narrative, timing, editing, sound, and the historical and contemporary context of animation. With animation playing an increasingly important role in daily media consumption, the programme prepares graduates for careers as independent filmmakers or as part of wider creative teams.

External live projects, competitions, and exhibitions provide opportunities for work to be noticed and gain professional experience. In the final year, students produce a graduation film suitable for submission to national and international animation and film festivals. The course features visits from high-profile industry professionals, including BAFTA-nominated animation studio Fettle, offering insights into professional practice and career development within the creative industries.

Employability outcomes are strong, with Derby ranked 15th among all UK universities and 12th among English institutions, and 96% of graduates in work or further study within six months of completing the degree (HESA 2016).
