What you will study
The BSc (Hons) Marketing and Consumer Psychology degree at Derby focuses on understanding how consumers make purchasing decisions, behave, and experience products and services. The programme equips students with the skills to develop marketing techniques and campaigns that influence consumer behaviour, while providing opportunities to apply industry-relevant skills that enhance employability. Guest speakers from diverse backgrounds contribute to the learning experience, and collaboration with organisations helps students understand customer perspectives. Opportunities to study abroad at international partner institutions broaden global perspectives, and real marketing projects offer practical experience.
This marketing degree is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM), allowing graduates with a 2:2 or higher to gain exemptions towards CIM Certificate and Diploma modules, supporting a fast-tracked professional marketing career. The course emphasizes the critical application of customer insight methods and consumer theory to marketing scenarios, fostering a thorough understanding of contemporary marketing issues.
Teaching methods are varied and interactive, including lectures and seminars led by tutors and guest speakers, individual and group-based practical assignments such as advertising campaigns, blogs, infographics, social media content, videos, and TV commercials—many aligned with real company briefs. Students also participate in visits to exhibitions, trade fairs, and companies, as well as internships and research projects. Assessment is conducted through coursework incorporating individual assignments and group tasks, including written research reports, visual presentations, creative outputs, and online assessments. Group work at levels 4 and 5 develops collaborative skills, while independent work at level 6 enhances research and critical analysis abilities.
Every student is assigned a Personal Academic Tutor (PAT) from the start of the programme, providing guidance, support, and insight throughout the academic journey. The PAT helps students explore strengths, address challenges, set goals, reflect on progress, and develop both academic and personal skills. Support extends to identifying extra-curricular opportunities, work experience, and skill development beyond the course, ensuring students gain the confidence and practical experience required for future careers.
Strong industry connections are embedded in the programme, with partnerships across multiple sectors providing hands-on opportunities, exposure to current industry practices, and access to innovations. These collaborations bridge the gap between classroom learning and professional practice, preparing graduates to succeed in competitive global markets.
