What you will study
The Marketing and Data Insights degree at Derby provides students with the opportunity to work on real marketing projects, engage with clients, and present ideas in professional settings. The programme is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM), and graduates achieving a 2:2 or higher gain exemptions toward CIM Certificate and Diploma modules, supporting professional progression. Students may also gain a global perspective through study abroad opportunities with partner institutions. The curriculum is designed with industry needs in mind, incorporating guest speakers, industry-led projects, and work experience to prepare graduates for careers in marketing and business analytics.
The course combines marketing expertise with business technology, equipping students with skills for careers in big data management, marketing insights, business analysis, or consultancy. It provides comprehensive knowledge of current and emerging business technologies, including databases, decision-making systems, and e-commerce platforms. Students critically evaluate the commercial management of IT and the strategic role of business analytics, developing the ability to inform strategic decisions and propose IT-based solutions to marketing challenges.
Teaching methods are varied, interactive, and practical, including lectures and seminars led by academic staff and guest speakers, individual and group-based assignments such as advertising campaigns, blogs, infographics, social media content, videos, and TV commercials, often for real company briefs. The programme also includes visits to exhibitions, trade fairs, and companies, as well as internships and research projects. Assessment is conducted through coursework, encompassing individual and group tasks that simulate real business scenarios, such as written reports, visual presentations, and creative outputs including infographics, advertisements, films, blogs, podcasts, and client-focused projects. Group work at earlier levels prepares students for collaborative environments, while independent research and critical analysis are emphasised at the final level to deepen professional expertise.
