Master of Arts - Film and Screen Production

University of Derby - Derby

What you will study

The MA Film and Screen Production programme guides students through all stages of the creative content-making process to complete a short film, documentary, or full-length screenplay or script. Teaching and mentoring are delivered by staff with extensive experience in the film and television industry, who are highly knowledgeable about career opportunities and commissioning processes and use their professional networks to support access to placements and industry opportunities.

Students become part of a vibrant and supportive community of creative practitioners, encouraged to experiment, take creative risks, and develop their own artistic voice. High-specification filmmaking equipment is available for use, including RED and ARRI digital cameras as well as traditional celluloid 35mm film. The programme benefits from professional partnerships such as with Soundsnap, a leading global sound-effects library used by organisations including the BBC, Apple, Disney, and HBO, providing students with free access to professionally curated audio resources for film editing, sound design, and post-production work.

Recognising the global demand for new and authentic creative stories, the course is designed to nurture original voices and actively welcomes applicants from communities historically under-represented on screen. Students may specialise in filmmaking, documentary production, or scriptwriting and, under close academic mentorship, progressively develop the practical, aesthetic, and technical skills necessary to create an original major project, which may take the form of a short film, documentary, or a full-length script for film, television, or theatre.

The programme also builds essential commercial awareness and interpersonal skills required for professional success, including training in pitching techniques and the effective communication of creative ideas. Alongside practical development, students explore the wider challenges of content production and engage with theoretical perspectives that examine the historical, social, commercial, environmental, and international contexts shaping contemporary creative work.
