Overview
This degree provides an accelerated pathway for motivated recent graduates and career changers seeking to enter the social work profession. The programme is approved by Social Work England, enabling graduates to register as qualified social workers once their degree is awarded. It offers high-quality practical experience through placements in both adult and children’s services, including a final 100-day placement involving statutory interventions. Strong links with local employers and stakeholders ensure that elements of the teaching are delivered by experienced practitioners and service users. The course focuses on applied learning, preparing students to work effectively across statutory, private, and voluntary sectors within the UK. Teaching is delivered by experts from the Department of Mental Health and Social Work, where leading research in social work and mental health informs the curriculum. The programme covers a broad range of social work theories and develops students’ ability to apply them across diverse practice contexts. Areas of study include psychosocial perspectives, sociology, psychology, and human development, with a strong emphasis on relationship-based practice and systemic approaches. Students also gain an understanding of relevant legislation and how it is applied in professional settings. The curriculum is aligned with Social Work England Professional Standards, the Professional Capabilities Framework (PCF), and the Knowledge and Skills Statements (KSS) for both children’s and adults’ services.
