Graduate Certificate - Therapeutic Recreation (TREC)

Students learn to provide client-centered, strength-based therapeutic recreation services through the application of the therapeutic recreation process. They develop the skills necessary to conduct client assessments and to design, implement, and evaluate both group and individual therapeutic recreation programs. A range of facilitation techniques is explored to support individuals in engaging in meaningful recreation and leisure experiences that promote health-related goals, enhance functional abilities, and improve overall quality of life.

Graduates of the program are eligible to become registered members of Therapeutic Recreation Ontario (R/TRO). The level of membership is determined by the graduate’s postsecondary credential:

• R/TRO for graduates with degrees • R/TRO DIP for graduates with diplomas

Career opportunities are available in a variety of health and human service settings, including: • Acute care, chronic care, and specialized hospitals • Provincial agencies or facilities supporting individuals with psychiatric or developmental disabilities • Rehabilitation programs • Children’s treatment centres • Municipal recreation departments • Long-term care facilities and adult day programs • Correctional programs and facilities • Community or private agencies serving individuals with illness or disability • Private practice
