Overview
This course prepares students for careers in sport that encompass both performance and participation, whether coaching elite or amateur athletes or promoting the benefits of sport to the wider community. It equips learners with the knowledge and skills to use sport as a catalyst for positive change, working with individuals and groups of all abilities to enhance their development and engagement.
Students have the opportunity to enhance their employability through relevant voluntary work placements across the sector and by gaining additional sport coaching awards to strengthen their professional profiles. The programme makes full use of Derby’s specialist sports centre and exceptional facilities, providing practical learning environments for a wide range of sports and activities.
Teaching is delivered by enthusiastic and experienced staff who bring extensive professional expertise in sport coaching and personal development. The course also features guest lectures from expert coaches, giving students insight into current practice and industry perspectives. The curriculum aligns with global initiatives, including the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, with particular focus on promoting ‘Good Health and Well-being’ through increased participation in sport.
Including a foundation year within the four-year study programme provides students with an early advantage in their academic and professional development. This year allows them to strengthen their skills, knowledge and confidence, with extensive support from expert staff, before progressing to stage one of the honours degree. The foundation year can also be especially valuable for those considering a career change and wishing to gain familiarity with new subject areas.
Degrees that include a foundation year are structured as continuous programmes, meaning that students do not need to reapply once the first year has been successfully completed.
