Overview

The BSc (Hons) Environmental Science and Sustainability with Foundation Year is a future-focused programme designed to equip students with applied skills to address current environmental challenges and identify emerging issues. The course is interdisciplinary in nature, allowing students to either specialise in specific subject areas aligned with career ambitions or study a wide range of topics to develop a broad knowledge base.

The curriculum reflects an outside-in approach that embeds key global frameworks including the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, the United Nations Biodiversity Framework, and the IUCN 30-Year Plan for Biodiversity. Teaching is delivered by an expert team of active researchers whose work spans areas such as climate change, marine ecosystems, environmental degradation, ecosystem services, urban sustainability, and biodiversity conservation. In the final year, students may choose to complete either an Independent Study dissertation or an Industrial Project, providing the opportunity to work directly within industry on live briefs to help solve real-world problems. The course can be undertaken either with or without an Industrial Placement Year.

With increasing global pressure on industries and governments to respond to the damaging impacts of human activity and to develop innovative approaches that promote environmental sustainability, the programme has been designed to meet rising demand for graduates capable of shaping practical, positive solutions. Graduates develop an interdisciplinary and problem-solving approach to global sustainability, alongside an understanding of personal and organisational responsibility and accountability, supported by a strong focus on applied, solution-based learning.

The programme combines theoretical study with extensive practical experience. For example, the second-year Environmental and Ethics Legislation module includes a minimum of 30 hours of work placement to develop professional practice skills. In the final year, the Business and Sustainability module incorporates a field trip providing first-hand exposure to sustainability initiatives taking place within charities, businesses, and government organisations.
