Overview

Integrated Foundation - Bachelor of Arts (Honours) - Illustration for Communication (W221) is a dynamic, practice‑led course designed to develop the skills and knowledge required for a career in the expanding creative industries. The learning experience spans from traditional image‑making techniques to screen‑based digital media projects, sitting at the intersection of graphic design, animation, publishing, advertising, fashion, games design, film, television, and architecture.

Contemporary illustration occupies a unique position at the crossroads of graphic design, advertising, and publishing, as well as fashion, product design, animation, and games design. Illustrators operate as visual storytellers—creating compelling images and narratives for both print and digital platforms. Their work plays a crucial role in communicating ideas and enriching content across books, films, television, interactive media, and mobile applications. With its adaptability and cross‑disciplinary nature, illustration continues to evolve as a central component of the creative industries.

Modern illustrators navigate an industry that demands adaptability, conceptual thinking, and the ability to respond imaginatively to diverse briefs. While many illustrators work independently as freelancers, collaboration across disciplines is increasingly common, resulting in innovative, interactive, and visually engaging material. At its core, illustration remains a personally expressive form of visual communication, where an illustrator’s unique “voice” and “style” bring depth and individuality to every message conveyed.

This course prepares emerging illustrators to enter the rapidly evolving field of contemporary illustration through the exploration of ideas and themes across commercial, social, political, and cultural contexts. It encourages innovative storytelling and experimentation, fostering practitioners who are informed by the rich heritage of illustration while forward‑thinking in their approach to its 21st‑century applications.

Drawing upon numerous platforms for visual communication and narrative, the program identifies professional contexts and applications for illustrated imagery, guiding participants toward careers within the creative industries. Emphasis is placed on developing a distinctive visual identity supported by an industry‑ready online portfolio that showcases both self‑directed and collaborative projects.

A broad methodology of drawing and image‑making is explored, encompassing observation, interpretation, painting, collage, digital print, and animation. Supported by cutting‑edge facilities and technical expertise, participants are encouraged to experiment, innovate, and develop new skills and imaginative concepts that contribute to a vibrant and sustainable illustration practice.

This courses focuses on building essential creative, technical, and conceptual skills. Core topics include a grounding in fundamental design principles such as typography, colour, hierarchy, layout, and imagery, alongside the development of clear visual narratives, identities, and design systems. Learners explore effective visual storytelling through sequencing, pacing, and tone, while also conducting research with strong cultural, social, and ethical awareness. The stage develops proficiency with industry‑standard software, including Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Animate, After Effects, Acrobat, and Premiere Pro, and introduces the management of production workflows from pre‑production through to post‑production. Emphasis is also placed on the critical evaluation of design work using relevant professional criteria and on the creation of professional portfolios, slide decks, and pitch presentations that reflect an emerging personal and creative identity.
