Overview

The BA (Hons) Entrepreneurship and Creative and Professional Writing programme develops writing and editing skills while exploring the contexts in which writing is produced. The course also covers key business themes, enabling graduates to generate innovative business solutions and succeed within the writing industry and related sectors. Creative Writing modules encompass poetry, literary prose fiction, journalistic and non-fiction writing, editing and sub-editing, as well as collaboration on large and small-scale writing projects. In parallel, business, enterprise, and entrepreneurship modules equip students with the skills to establish businesses, work in freelance capacities, or contribute enterprisingly within SMEs or larger organisations.

The programme emphasizes practical experience, providing opportunities for work placements, volunteering, and community engagement through specific modules and continuous extracurricular activities. Building on Derby’s centuries-old tradition of literary and cultural innovation, students are encouraged to participate actively in the thriving student and graduate live writing scene to further develop creative abilities.

Creative and Professional Writing modules are designed to allow students to define professional and vocational goals, while supporting the planned development of individual writing and working practices to achieve these objectives. Entrepreneurship modules provide a broad, leading-edge, and vocationally relevant education in enterprise, reflecting the complex and challenging nature of contemporary business and preparing graduates to apply entrepreneurial skills across a range of professional contexts.
