Overview

The BA History (Hons) with English Literature option allows students to pursue a major/minor pathway that reflects a strong interest in the written word. History modules, which make up two-thirds of the programme, require sustained engagement with primary historical sources, placing textual analysis at the core of historical study. This complements English Literature modules, many of which focus on British or American historical periods explored within the History curriculum. By combining History and English Literature, students develop highly transferable skills valued by employers, including advanced reading comprehension, written and oral communication, textual analysis, and logical reasoning. History is one of the most popular subjects among UK university students, valued for the way a historical perspective helps make sense of today’s rapidly changing world. Employers highly regard history graduates because the discipline develops independent thinking, the ability to work under pressure, and the skill to construct coherent, evidence-based arguments. Historical research is more accessible and engaging than ever, with the internet opening up a wealth of archival resources. The BA History programme at Buckingham has been carefully designed by a team of experienced and high-calibre historians. The course begins with survey modules covering major political, economic, and cultural themes in the history of Britain and Europe from the 1500s to the present day. As the programme progresses, students move on to more specialised areas such as empire, global migration, and heritage studies. The degree culminates in an independent dissertation, drawing together the research, analytical, and writing skills developed throughout the course. The programme not only teaches historical knowledge but also develops the ability to think, research, and write as a historian.
