Loughborough University - Loughborough Campus
Civil engineers address some of the most significant challenges facing modern society. They are responsible for designing and constructing the infrastructure and structures needed to support an increasingly urbanised global population—within a dynamic environmental context that demands urgent responses to the carbon challenge.
Loughborough University’s MSc in Civil Engineering equips students with advanced numerical, analytical, design, and management skills, which are applied to real-world engineering problems. Combined with specialised technical knowledge and critical thinking abilities, these skills prepare graduates for careers in civil engineering, progression toward professional engineering qualification, or further academic study such as doctoral research.
Graduates of the programme typically join multidisciplinary teams working on diverse infrastructure projects and buildings, including bridges, railways, skyscrapers, and sports stadia. The cross-disciplinary nature of the programme and School enables students to pursue roles across various sectors of the construction cycle. The learning experience is further enhanced through guest lectures and industry-led challenges delivered by leading professionals in the field.
The School of Architecture, Building and Civil Engineering is recognised as one of four Royal Academy of Engineering Centres of Excellence in Sustainable Building Design and is one of the top-funded built environment research groups supported by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). The School also hosts the Building and Industrial Services Pipework Academy (BISPA), a unique collaboration with Tata Steel and the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE), offering students a distinctive, holistic perspective on civil engineering.
Recent investments totalling £6 million have expanded and enhanced the School’s facilities, which now include new study spaces, upgraded computing resources, a 3,000m² laboratory, and one of the fastest high-performance computing clusters available in any UK academic institution.
