Overview

The BSc (Hons) Information Technology at Derby is designed in collaboration with industry and the business world to ensure that graduates develop the skills sought by employers. The programme covers major developments in IT today and offers the opportunity to gain valuable experience during an optional year in industry, supported by dedicated and highly experienced placement staff. Students study in state-of-the-art facilities, including dedicated computing laboratories and a Data Visualisation lab, and have the flexibility to transfer to another course within the Computing portfolio after the first year. Assessment is entirely coursework-based, with no written exams.

As organisations increasingly depend on information technology to operate efficiently and effectively, this degree prepares graduates for career opportunities across sectors globally. The course reflects the growing reliance of modern society, and the developing world, on IT products and services. Mass-market consumer products, including smart and mobile devices, integrate seamlessly with IoT technology, the World Wide Web, and wireless communication systems. This connectivity enables access to vast amounts of information, while the resulting ‘Big Data’ can be leveraged to support sound business decisions and contribute to wider public benefit.

The course emphasises two key themes: data analysis and the use of big data, and the management of computer systems in business. These themes are reinforced through a range of related computing and business topics. Students also gain experience with leading modern analysis tools, such as R, Python, Watson Analytics, SAS JMP, and Tableau, to extend their expertise.
