Overview

The Sociology and History programme at Derby enables students to gain critical insight into traditional academic concepts and apply them to contemporary life and the forces that shape societies. The course examines inequalities, power structures, and pressing social issues, equipping students with the skills and understanding necessary to navigate and positively influence modern societies. As a dynamic and evolving subject, sociology provides the tools to analyse global change and its impacts on nations, communities, and individuals, offering a comprehensive study of human life and social interaction.

The programme is complemented by the study of History, with Derby and Derbyshire offering a rich historical heritage as an ideal context. The History courses explore key societal, cultural, political, and economic developments from the sixteenth century to the present, both locally and globally. Students engage with a range of modules that illuminate historical processes alongside contemporary social dynamics.

A global perspective is fostered through work placements, community engagement, participation in student societies, guest lectures, and relevant study visits, creating an environment that demonstrates the practical applications of Sociology and History. Opportunities to study abroad for a semester further broaden students’ perspectives and deepen understanding of global issues.

The Sociology faculty consists of experienced researchers whose work addresses some of society’s most pressing challenges. Research expertise spans social policy, childhood and war, extremism and counter-terrorism, conspiracy theory, politics and social movements, postcolonialism and globalisation, Marxism, feminism, and social theory. Staff regularly publish findings, present at international conferences, and contribute to local, national, and international media. Students benefit from guest lectures and departmental research seminars delivered by leading academics and professionals from other institutions.

History teaching at Derby is underpinned by active research and scholarship. Faculty continue to advance their expertise through research, conference presentations, and publication of books and articles. This approach supports students in developing as researchers and cultivates the confidence to share their own research with broader audiences.
