Overview

The MSc Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering programme develops the professional skills and specialist knowledge sought by employers, supporting progression to senior roles within sectors such as automotive, aerospace, petrochemical, scientific, and manufacturing engineering. This accredited MSc partially meets the exemplifying academic benchmark requirements for registration as a Chartered Engineer (CEng). Graduates who also hold an IMechE-accredited BEng (Hons) degree are able to demonstrate that they have satisfied the full educational requirements for CEng registration. The programme benefits from excellent industry connections with leading organisations including Rolls-Royce, Toyota, Balfour Beatty, Bombardier, and Pektron, and is currently accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE).

High-quality teaching ensures that students remain informed of the latest developments across disciplines ranging from e-manufacturing to robotics. The course allows studies to be tailored to individual professional interests, including a major independent research project, while also building managerial skills essential for success within a global industry environment. Drawing upon current industrial practice, the MSc develops advanced capabilities in both mechanical and manufacturing engineering to place long-term career ambitions on a firm footing.

The MSc Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering programme prepares graduates to apply for registration as Chartered Engineers (CEng). Chartered Engineers apply fundamental scientific and engineering principles to research, develop, and implement new technologies, promote advanced design methodologies, introduce more efficient production processes, initiate innovative marketing and construction concepts, and pioneer new engineering services and management practices.

The programme is underpinned by strong industry partnerships with organisations such as Rolls-Royce, Toyota, Balfour Beatty, Bombardier, Pektron, and the Local Enterprise Partnership D2N2. An established Industrial Advisory Panel, comprising representatives from partner companies, ensures that programme content remains aligned with current industry developments and that these insights are embedded into teaching delivery.

Students have opportunities to engage in funded research projects through the Institute for Innovation in Sustainable Engineering (IISE) and the Rail Research and Innovation Centre (RRIC) within the College of Science and Engineering. Research activity covers high-value manufacturing technologies including additive manufacturing and 3D printing, composite materials design, simulation and testing, optimisation and application processes, and circular-economy business models alongside sustainable organisational change design and development.

The MSc programme offers a flexible learning structure, providing a wide choice of specialist modules and diverse learning approaches. Teaching is delivered through a combination of lectures, tutorials, online learning, and workplace-based study. Independent study is balanced with collaborative group work, while project-based learning provides practical experience in team-based engineering environments.
