Overview

A Joint Honours programme in English and Sociology allows students to explore how equality, opportunity, and social structures shape life today, while examining the human experience through both sociological and literature-based perspectives. The course encourages critical engagement with questions about identity, purpose, and the nature of society, providing insights into social justice, power distribution, globalisation, and self-expression. Students develop a sophisticated understanding of literature, language, and culture, alongside the study of social structures and contemporary societal issues.

The programme is delivered by academics actively engaged in research across both disciplines. English specialists contribute expertise in areas such as Romanticism, post-colonial theatre, nineteenth-century literature, critical theory, and postmodernism, while Sociology lecturers focus on social policy, childhood and war, extremism and counter-terrorism, conspiracy theory, politics, and social movements. Students benefit from exposure to a range of cultural expressions across historical periods and global contexts, fostering a comprehensive understanding of human experience. This integrated approach equips students with the analytical and interpretative skills necessary to navigate and influence the modern world.
