Overview

The MSc Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapy (Adult or Children and Young People) is a BABCP-accredited postgraduate programme designed to develop skilled, ethical and independent cognitive behavioural psychotherapists. The course supports the development of confidence in contemporary theories and evidence-based practice, preparing graduates to work in line with current academic, NHS, scientific and professional body standards, while engaging in interprofessional learning opportunities. Taught by a highly qualified and experienced lecturing team, the programme is well suited to caring professionals seeking to deepen their expertise in cognitive behavioural psychotherapy.

The course encourages the development of reflective and innovative practitioners with a strong critical perspective. Students explore the theoretical, social, cultural and ideological contexts in which clients experience and manage difficulties, alongside major trends and orientations within cognitive behavioural psychotherapy. A strong emphasis is placed on ethical practice and the informed professionalisation of psychotherapy.

Teaching and learning methods vary according to subject content and include problem-based learning, lectures, group work and skills-based practice to ensure a practical and occupationally focused learning experience. All members of the teaching team are practising cognitive behavioural therapists, and each student is supported by a personal academic tutor who monitors progress and provides academic guidance. The course is commonly studied part-time to accommodate professional commitments.

Assessment methods are closely aligned with professional practice and sector requirements. These include critical case studies applying theory to clinical contexts, observed examinations and video-recorded clinical practice with critical self-analysis, and a reflective portfolio demonstrating the application of research, problem-solving and outcome evaluation, fulfilling BABCP accreditation requirements. Written assignments assess academic skills in critical analysis and synthesis, alongside a clinical examination that evaluates professional judgement and decision-making. The curriculum is closely mapped to the health and social care sector to ensure learning remains current, relevant and responsive to national policy developments.
