Overview

Designed and taught by practicing lawyers and academics, Deakin University’s accredited Bachelor of Laws combines sound legal training with real-world experience. Students will develop key skills in problem-solving, analytical thinking and ethical reasoning.

Attracting some of the best and brightest students in Australia for nearly 30 years, graduates enjoy high employment rates in dynamic roles across law, business, journalism, public administration, private enterprise and politics.

The legal profession is highly commercialized, with lawyers increasingly required to provide clients with practical and commercial advice, as well as legal expertise. A distinctive feature of this course is its focus on practical learning. As credit towards the degree, students will complete work-integrated learning placements. They may be placed at law firms, legal aid providers and government offices that will help them learn the in-demand legal skills and experience that employers are looking for today.

Students can choose Deakin University’s Bachelor of Laws and develop a solid foundation of practical legal skills, including: • negotiation • mediation • preparing for court appearances • legal drafting • statutory interpretation

Students will also build transferable skills that will launch them on a variety of career paths. That could mean entering the business sector in almost any industry or government service in areas such as law reform, politics or public administration.
