Overview

the BA (Hons) History with Economics (3-year degree) explores one of the UK’s most popular and respected academic disciplines, combining historical insight with economic analysis. A historical perspective enables a deeper understanding of today’s rapidly changing world, while the study of history develops the ability to think independently, work under pressure, and construct coherent, evidence-based arguments. Advances in digital access have also made historical research more engaging than ever, with extensive archival resources now readily available online.

The BA History programme has been carefully designed and refined by Buckingham’s team of experienced and high-calibre historians. Students begin with survey courses that examine major themes in the political, economic, and cultural history of Britain and Europe from the 1500s to the present day, before progressing to more specialised areas such as empire, global migration, and heritage studies. The degree culminates in an independent dissertation that draws on the research, analytical, and writing skills developed throughout the programme. As a result, the course not only teaches history but also develops strong historical thinking, research, and academic writing capabilities.

The History with Economics option allows students to study a complementary combination of subjects that reflect a broad range of academic interests. Often described as the ‘motor of history’, economic activity is understood within its historical context, shaped by political and legal systems, technological developments, and patterns of transport and trade. Many History modules, which make up around two-thirds of the degree, focus on economic trends, change, and key events, while the Economics component provides insight into areas such as the history of economic thought and the continued influence of historically shaped economic systems today. This combination develops strong skills in written analysis, communication, and advanced numeracy, producing graduates who are highly capable and employable across a wide range of careers.
