Overview

The programme is designed to enable students to specialise in International Business Law, equipping them with a comprehensive and critical understanding of the legal processes governing international business transactions. It covers key areas such as trade law, corporate governance, employment law, and international alternative dispute resolution, while also deepening knowledge of law as an academic discipline. Students develop an understanding of legal methods, concepts, and the broader social, political, and theoretical contexts in which legal systems operate.

The course enhances professional development by broadening students’ perspectives and strengthening their ability to analyse complex legal, economic, cultural, ethical, and political issues in a transnational context. It fosters advanced research and writing skills applicable across a wide range of sectors, including legal practice, policymaking, corporate environments, government, and academia. Students are trained to apply their knowledge creatively and systematically to address challenges in global trade and corporate governance, while building high-level transferable skills, critical self-awareness, and effective problem-solving and decision-making abilities.

A distinctive feature of the programme is its international focus, allowing students to develop advanced expertise in International Business Law alongside strategies for personal and professional growth. Teaching is delivered by experienced academic and industry professionals with strong links to public, private, and enterprise sectors. Students have the opportunity to undertake a traditional dissertation to further develop subject expertise, as well as attend guest lectures from leading specialists, providing valuable insight into contemporary professional practice. Employability skills are embedded throughout the curriculum to align with current industry demands.

Upon completion, graduates demonstrate a systematic understanding of key principles, practices, and emerging issues in International Business Law, as well as the employability skills required for career progression. They gain knowledge of the historical and ongoing influence of English law, the UN Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods (CISG), and the regulatory framework of the World Trade Organization (WTO). Students also develop an understanding of the effectiveness and impact of legal mechanisms governing international trade, commercial transactions, and dispute resolution, alongside awareness of the ethical, social, and cultural contexts in which law operates.

The programme also develops advanced cognitive and intellectual skills, enabling students to critically analyse complex legal issues and apply sound judgement in evaluating contractual and trade mechanisms. Graduates are able to assess competing legal arguments, identify potential disputes, and interpret decisions from courts, arbitral bodies, and international organisations. They demonstrate critical awareness of the relationships between international, regional, and domestic legal frameworks, as well as the ability to conduct independent research with originality and authority. The programme culminates in the development of sophisticated analytical, evaluative, and innovative capabilities at Master’s level.
