Overview

The foundation year will support and provide students with the relevant theoretical and practical knowledge they need to be prepared and confident to start the BEng degree. Students will develop their core knowledge and understanding of:

• drawing • physics • engineering concepts • materials from a design perspective • maths and statistics • higher education (HE) study skills.

On successful completion of the foundation year students will progress to the first year of the BEng Product Design Engineering course.

The hands-on learning throughout the course developed on and off campus and on-line learning will develop their practical problem-solving approach. This makes up 40-60% of each year of study so students can be confident, work-ready engineer by the time they graduate.

Students will start by learning the essentials of mechanical related engineering, engineering evaluation, concept generation, design, prototype and testing real problems. Students will also develop their confidence in applying the fundamental science (laws of physics), mathematics and statistics principles, and computing skills in context to engineering. Through on and off campus and on-line learning, engineering laboratories and workshops students will put theory into practice and they'll have the opportunity to work collaboratively on a group project in their first year.

As students progress through the degree, they'll be supported to gain specialist skills and knowledge in areas such as engineering product life cycle, CAD tools, Industry 4.0 technology, manufacturing control, instrumentation, and communication systems. In the final year, students will work independently and as part of a team on a major design engineering project.
