Overview

The MA Music and Sound for Screen at Middlesex University equips students with the creative and technical skills to compose, mix, and deliver original soundtracks for film, games, and television. The program covers scoring techniques, post-production workflows, and immersive audio environments through taught sessions and embedded, credit-bearing work experience modules, while supporting the development of an industry-ready portfolio. Collaboration, sustainability, and ethical practice are embedded throughout, preparing graduates to be confident and adaptable professionals.

Students learn to compose, arrange, and produce music for film, TV, and interactive media using industry-standard tools and workflows. Based in London, a hub for world-leading creative industries, the program provides opportunities for live briefs, placements, and collaborations with media, film, and post-production companies. It also develops professional skills in contracts, copyright, and production management for sustainable careers in screen music, alongside hands-on experience with AI-assisted composition, immersive audio, and spatial sound design.

The course emphasizes cross-disciplinary collaboration, allowing students to work with filmmakers, animators, and game designers to create original soundtracks. Middlesex’s Careers and Futures team provides employability support, networking opportunities, and professional mentoring. One- and two-year modes are available, featuring embedded, credit-bearing work experience on real-world industry projects.

The program is delivered in MDX Studios’ state-of-the-art facilities, including studios for film, radio, digital media, VFX, animation, and virtual production, as well as recording studios and suites for post-production, editing, color grading, and Pro Tools.

MA programmes feature one- and two-year options with embedded, credit-bearing work placements on live industry projects.
