Overview

The question of war has been central to human experience since the emergence of political communities and remains a defining feature of the international system. Understanding its causes and consequences requires an interdisciplinary approach. Drawing on perspectives from Sun Tzu to modern concepts like “Shock and Awe,” this degree develops both conceptual and empirical insights into the use of force in international relations.

In the 21st century, early post-Cold War expectations of a “New World Order” have diminished, giving way to renewed concerns about regional and global conflict. The programme explores key strategic challenges facing the world today and examines the evolving nature of war, from traditional great power competition to contemporary forms of hybrid warfare. Ongoing tensions between Russia and the West, instability in the Middle East and South Asia, increasing Chinese military assertiveness, and persistent intra-state conflicts highlight the continued importance of critically understanding war, strategy, and intelligence.
