Overview
The MSc Clinical Exercise Science focuses on three core areas: rehabilitation and training, physical activity and health, and clinical exercise physiology, preparing graduates for a wide range of careers in clinical exercise science, including roles in clinical rehabilitation, clinical exercise physiology, health, and wellbeing. The programme provides valuable experience in clinical and community settings through placements and enables students to explore clinically based research, culminating in an independent research project. Teaching is delivered by leading experts in clinical exercise science within a thriving postgraduate sport and exercise science community, reflecting the rapid growth of this specialist field both nationally and internationally.
Clinical exercise scientists play an increasingly important role in improving health and wellbeing by applying the principles of sport and exercise science to support individuals managing long-term health conditions or recovering from serious illness. Recognition of the need for closer collaboration between clinical exercise science and the NHS, as highlighted in the UK Government’s National Health Service – Five Year Forward View, alongside the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, has further accelerated demand for professionals in this area. This master’s programme is designed to prepare graduates to enter the profession by advancing understanding of human function and behaviour, developing intellectual, analytical, and critical skills, and providing real-world learning opportunities. Through a strong emphasis on applied practice, training, and professional development, graduates gain a comprehensive understanding of the role of the clinical exercise scientist and are well prepared to improve health outcomes and quality of life across diverse settings.
